Have you ever read a message from someone in your family and felt your stomach tighten before you’d even reached the end?
You were getting on with your day. Now you’re holding your phone, reading the same lines again.
Why have they said that? What am I supposed to do with this? How do I answer without making things worse?
Perhaps you start composing a reply in your head. Then another. You put the phone down, but you’re still thinking about the message while you try to do something else.
You might even feel annoyed with yourself for being so affected.
I know what they’re like. Why does it still get to me?
You can understand a difficult relationship and still feel anxious when a message arrives. Knowing what you want to say doesn’t always settle the tight stomach or the thoughts that keep coming back.
One client told me about an overwhelming message from their brother. This time, they felt far less anxious than before.
I’m sharing their own words here, without their name to protect their privacy.
When the message stays with you
The message takes a minute to read. You’re still thinking about it hours later.
Perhaps you’re trying to concentrate at work, but you keep remembering one sentence. Or you’re talking to someone else while privately wondering whether you should reply now, wait, explain more, or say less.
You may want to reply straight away, just to stop feeling so on edge.
And if you do reply, that can start another round of worry.
Was I too blunt? Did I explain myself properly? What if they take that the wrong way?
Sometimes there really is something difficult to deal with. The message may be unfair, upsetting, or asking more of you than you want to give. You may need to think carefully about what happens next.
You can take that seriously and still want help with how anxious it makes you feel.
You want to deal with the message without losing the rest of your day to it.
What one client noticed after our work
The client shared this reflection:
“I noticed real changes after just two sessions — sleeping better and feeling calmer overall.
Even when I received an overwhelming message from my brother, I felt far less anxious and nervous than before.”
If you’ve ever put your phone down and still felt that knot in your stomach an hour later, you’ll know why feeling less anxious could matter.
Perhaps you’d love to read a difficult message without immediately feeling you have to explain yourself, keep someone happy, or find the perfect reply.
And when you go to bed, you’d like to be able to sleep, rather than go over it all again.
This client noticed a difference after two sessions. Your experience and the amount of support you need may be different.
How I help when family relationships keep you on edge
Perhaps it’s more than this one message. You often worry about upsetting someone, feel guilty when you don’t do what they want, or spend hours questioning yourself after a conversation.
You’d like to say what you mean without feeling sick about it—and make a decision without needing everyone to be happy with you first.
We can begin with one recent exchange. I help you put words to what feels hardest about it, then guide the tapping as we work with the feelings and beliefs that keep you worrying and questioning yourself. If earlier experiences come up, we can gently work with those too. You choose what to share, and we can slow down or pause whenever you need.
We work to change those feelings and beliefs, so you can begin to feel more sure of yourself around your family—whether you’re answering a message, saying no, or letting someone be disappointed without immediately rushing to make everything okay.
What feeling more sure of yourself could look like
You read a difficult message. It still bothers you, but you can take time to decide what you want to say.
You say no without spending the evening wondering whether you should have said yes.
Someone is unhappy with your answer, and you can care about that without immediately changing it.
These are examples of what we can work towards together, depending on what matters to you.
This client described sleeping better, feeling calmer overall, and feeling far less anxious when their brother’s message arrived. If family interactions often leave you tense or lying awake, you’ll know how much that kind of relief could mean.
If family interactions keep leaving you anxious
